Useful free tools that need to be installed

I have been using many free programs over the years.  I find that not all need to be installed to work.  Therefore, I have decided to make a list of useful free online tools that I often use.

Maximum PC has a list of tools that are very useful.  The list can be seen at http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/30_incredible_web_apps_you_need_try

Online tools

Google docs – Google pretty much has everything that a normal person would like to use.  I find this extremely useful since I can now access and edit my documents and spreadsheet files from anywhere.

Firefox bookmark add-on – I do not use this, but it looks promising.  It requires a user to create a user name and a password to use.  I currently use Google to keep track of my bookmarks.  The reason I stuck with Google is because I already have an email and password with them.  The Google bookmark can be found here.

Send email later – I find this quite convenient  There are some cases when you want to send an email at a later date.  For example, reminders of a convention, dental appointment, and/or future trip.  People tend to forget to send emails that should have been sent on a certain date.  This is a must have for people who write emails, but need to have to sent out at a later date.

Mcafee Virusscan, Trend Micro HouseCall, Symantec Antivirus- These are free versions that will scan for viruses, but not clean them.  If you suspect that you have a virus, use one of these first.  These are, in my opinion, three of the better virus scan programs you can find.  Mcafee is my personal favorite, but it only works with Internet Explorer.  Trend Micro Works on Linux and Solaris also.  Symantec works on Macintosh and Windows only.  If you must purchase one, purchases one of these.

Google Webmaster – I use this mainly to see what errors my page(s) have.  This tool gives you a lot of insight about your website.  I have not found much use for the other functions, but give it a try.  You may find that tool will do more than find errors in your website.

Useful free tools that need to be installed

Super video converter – This tool can pretty much convert any type of media file into another.

DVD43 – Decrypts movies so that they can be copied.  This requires Patin-Couffin Access Layer 36 to be installed to work.  You can get Patin-Couffin Access Layer 36 here.

Audacity – Music and/or sound editing program.  It can be used to increase or decrease the volume.  It has other functions, but I use it mainly for that.

Money Manager EX – An open source and free program to keep track of your personal finances.  It is fairly simple to use.  This program can be used in Windows, Linux and Mac OS.  It can also be set-up to be accessed by anyone through the Internet.

GNUCash – An open source and free small business and/or personal accounting program that can be run on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS.  Although, I have never used it, it seems to be a good free alternative for people wanting a small business double-entry bookkeeping system and/or personal accounting software that can be run on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS.  For a list of other free small business accounting software, one can visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_accounting_software

OSAlt.com – For those looking for free, open source alternatives for many of the commercial software that needs to be purchased, OSAlt.com has a massive list of both free, open source and non-free commercial software.  Software for Windows, Mac OS, and Linux is listed.

More will be added as I find them.
