Purchasing a Brother HL-3040CN Color Laser Printer

I have purchased a Brother HL-3040CN Color laser printer. From what I can see, the toner is not cheap. Therefore, it is recommended to shop around both online and in stores for the best prices.

There are some stores that sell compatible and/or refilled toner which can greatly reduce the overall cost of the printer.  InkOwl.com is a store that sells refill kits, Brother HL-3040CN compatible toner cartridges, and Brother HL-3040CN flag gear kits.

Therefore, the high CPP for the Brother HL-3040CN Color laser printer can be greatly reduced by purchasing compatible laser toner cartridges.

I have installed the printer drivers in Windows 7-64 bit, Windows Vista 32-bit, Windows XP Professional, Ubuntu 11.04, and Ubuntu 10.04. Currently, the printer is connected to my router using an Ethernet cable that needs to be purchased separately. The only cable provided in the box is a power plug. Therefore, either an Ethernet and/or a USB cable needs to be purchased or stolen from another device that no longer needs it.

To prevent paper jams from this printer for various types of paper, I always recommend trying to change the paper type to thick. The article can be read at http://aprivatebeach.com/blog/2009/12/prevent-laser-inkjet-printer-paper-jams/.  I have had lesser paper jams with a slower print speed.

Looking over the manual, there are many parts that needs to be replaced after they have reached their end-of-life.  Unfortunately, the price of the parts seem to cost more than a new printer.  Therefore, I recommend buying a new printer when the parts needs to be replaced.

One thing that can be done to try to extend the life of the Brother HL-3040CN Color laser printer beyond the end-of-life is to empty the Waste Toner Box when it is full.  If the Brother HL-3040CN Color laser printer cannot tell the difference between a new and old part, taking the part out and putting it back in may solve the end-of-life error messages.  My previous laser printer was solved by emptying the Waste toner cartridge when it was full, but I eventually killed it by trying to unjam the printer.  One of the rollers had big chunks of rubber missing from the tool used to unjam the printer which caused the printer to print poorly. The jam was caused by one account not set-up to print on thick paper.

The Brother HL-3040CN Color laser printer manual at http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/htmldoc/printer/cv_hl3040cn/eng/html/ug/index.html gives instructions on how to reset the counter for the drum units and the belt unit under the heading 5 Routine Maintenance.  As for the Waste Toner Box, it seems that emptying it or buying a new waste toner box is the only option.

The one annoyance that may come up with the Brother HL-3040CN Color laser printer printer is the following solution as noted by Brother.

Problem:

  • The printer cannot print full pages of a document.
  • An error message Out of Memory appears.

Solution:

Solution #1:

  1. Press Go to print the remaining data in the printer memory.
  2. Cancel the print job
  3. if you want to delete the remaining data in the printer memory. (See Buttons on page 75.)

Solution #2:

  • Reduce the complexity of your document or select a lower print resolution.

Solution #3:

  • Add more memory. (See Installing extra memory on page 100.)

Solution #4:

  • Print the document in smaller batches

The only other solution, if available, is to set the printer to print on the fly.  In other words, print the document as the data gets received without waiting for the whole document to get stored in memory.  Unfortunately, I do not think any OS has this option.

I have refilled the toner, added flags, and emptied the waste toner basket.  Refilling the toner was very simple.  Getting the cap off to remove the old toner was a serious problem.  I do not have the right tool to get the cap off.  Adding and setting the flag on the toner was annoying due from the fact that the gears keep falling out.  Furthermore, the gear to the far left has wings.  That gear needs to be turned so that the cover can be properly reinstalled.  The wings may block the cover from fitting properly.  Nevertheless, it can be done. Furthermore, resetting the flag will enable one to continue using the toner and remove the toner low error message.

The toner waste basket has 3 screws on the top that can be removed to open the basket.  This makes emptying the basket easy.

My Brother HL-3040CN Color Laser Printer showed an error message mentioning that streaking maybe present on the paper.  Therefore, cleaning the excess toner is required.  Fortunately, for this printer, there is a green sliding bar that will clean the excess toner.  An article explaining the streaking can be found at http://www.brighthub.com/computing/hardware/articles/66947.aspx

The black toner cartridge is on its last legs.  After 3 refills, the toner leaks out and makes a mess on the paper and on the inside of the printer.  I have purchased a black toner cartridge from inkowl to replace the old black toner cartridge when it runs out of toner.  The black splotches on the paper are minor and tolerable.  Therefore, I will continue to use the old toner.

I have the Brother HL-3040CN working in Linux Mint 13 64-bit.  Reading the posts, I have managed to get the Brother HL-3040CN working.  The forum at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1602075 with the posts #2 and #24 on the 3rd page together got LInux Mint 13 64-bit printing to the Brother HL-3040CN printer.

It seems that post #2 is required to print on Linux Mint 13 32-bit, but #24 is also required for 64-bit.

  1. No, before the Samsung, I had a HP monochrome printer.

I always try to buy the cheapest laser printer when the one I currently have breaks down. Although, back then, my HP monochrome laser printer was $500 and $120 for toner. Therefore, buying toner was cheaper.

I currently have a set of refill toner since the Brother toner cartridges are more than the printer itself as of right now.

  2. Didn’t you have a Brother laser printer before you bought your Samsung that you didn’t want to buy a new toner for?
