HP OfficeJet 6500 problem

I just bought a HP OfficeJet 6500 in early November.  All I really wanted to use it for is to work as a scanner and and fax machine.  I already have a color laser printer.  Therefore, it will not be used for printing.

Opening the box and trying to get it working proved to be quite a challenge.  Turning the printer on will produce the familiar working noises, but there is a very disturbing sound afterward.  It sounds like a moving part is stuck and is skipping.  Then a general printer error.  Error Code 0x610000f6 shows up on the screen.  Upon closer inspection, the ink cartridge holder is loose, and slides easily from left to middle, but once it reaches the far right it gets jammed. Therefore, it is apparent that the cartridge is getting caught.

The cartridge is loose and moves up and down slightly.  Lifting the cartridge slightly while moving allows the cartridge to move to the far right, so it is only a matter of keeping the cartridge up.  Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be serviced by a regular user.

If the printer still allowed me to send and receive faxes and scan documents, I will keep it.  Unfortunately, the one error breaks everything.

A lesson to be learned.  A laser printer does not have a moving part that moves from left to right quite like an inkjet.  Furthermore, I am pretty sure that a laser 4 in 1 will not have as many problems as an inkjet 4 in 1.

The HP OfficeJet 6500 will be going back, but I will be keeping an eye out for a laser 4 in 1.  Lasers do jam up, but it is always a paper jam with me.

HP’s long list of things to do when this error is encountered.  Of course, the final thing to do is bring it back for repair if all else fails.  http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01458822&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

PS.  If anyone finds a color  scanner/fax machine for less than $100 Canadian, please tell me.  That is what I actually want.

The defect is indeed due to a hardware/design error. Even if the printer is initially working fine, it will most likely show this defect after a while. It’s the consequence of clotted/dried ink being deposited on the rack and pinion mechanism that is moving the ink receptive “block” on the right hand side of the printer. As the rack and pinion will be moving with more and more difficulty, this will lead to breaking of the plastic device that is functioning as the “driver” of the mechanism.
In my printer this happened after 13 months, so just outside warranty.
    HP declines every responsibility, incredible.
I support every action to move HP into a more customer friendly mode.

Same problem. Have been informed by HP that it is a “hardware issue”
Normally covered under warranty and will replace, however my warranty had expired. Offered me an upgraded replacement with a discount.
