I have installed a few tools that seemed great at first, but I realized that a surfer does not want to have to look at several different pages to find the information. Furthermore, since I created my pages on ASecurePC.com in html, I decided to keep it that way. All these tools are in PHP, therefore, your server must use PHP.
The tools that I looked at:
Joomla – A very large open source tool. It has tons of functions and looks great. If you want to put your html pages on it, you will have to manually cut and past the pages one by one into the html editor. This is best described as the all-in-one solution.
Drupal – An open source competitor to Joomla. Which one you will you will depend on personal preference and/or what functions are found on one, but not the other.
MediaWiki – An editable wiki. Apparently, it was written for the Wikipedia, but now is available to everyone.
DokuWiki - Same as MediaWiki except that it does not require a database. All documents are stored as plain text files.
PHPBB – A bulletin board system. Also known as a forum is where you can create topics and people can post in questions in them. This is commonly how it is used.
WordPress – This is a blogging software. Allows anyone to turn a website into a blog.
Moodle – A program used by educators. It is used to create a website to teach courses online.
PHPMyVisites – You can see where your visitors are coming from. What search terms they used to reach your site. A great statistics tool.
Useful Webmaster Tools
Google Webmaster Central – This is what I use to keep track of what Google sees. This helps in determining what changes if any that need to be made. It is quite a useful tool.
Web Page Analyzer – This will tell you how long a page on your website will take to load. I recommend using this to see how big your page is in total.
The main thing that I look for is Total Size under Global statistics. The download times will increase and decrease depending on the load on the server at that time, therefore, this is not reliable.
The average webpage size is about 312K as of 2008. The full article can be found at http://www.websiteoptimization.com/speed/tweak/average-web-page/
aprivatebeach.com/blog has a Total Size of 171K. I try to keep my page light. This is when there is zero pictures shown in my posts.
